HISTORY

It was formerly known as Himalayan Zoological Park and was established on 14th August, 1958 in Darjeeling (West Bengal) as a joint venture of Govt. of India (Department of Science and Technology) and Govt. of West Bengal (Department of Education). In January, 1972, the Park was converted into a registered Society under West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961 with an understanding that the maintenance cost of the zoo will be shared by the Center and State Governments. The Society in May, 1993 was transferred to Department of Forests, Govt. of West Bengal. At the Govt. of India level the Zoological Park is under the Ministry of Environment and Forests. In 1975, Late Smt. Indira Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India dedicated the Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling in Memory of Late Smt. Padmaja Naidu, ex-governor of West Bengal. The Zoo was re-named as Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park.

Visitors Information

Sometimes we think about the relevance of a zoo for the population and communities where it is situated. What is the contribution of a zoo for a society? Is it only mere entertainment for the visitors by seeing the wild animals in captivity or there is something more. These visitors are more or less people coming out from far away places , and have not much in stake , particularly in tourist place like Darjeeling except pouring “ tourism money “ for the cause of the zoo economy , or on a larger scale for the town, its hotels and its restaurants. They come enjoy and go back to their respective places. So what should be our strategy for keeping the “Zoo “in their mind? On the other hand most of our Zoos are in the town area, or near population. Apart from maintaining highest standers of hygiene and veterinary care for animals and zoo personnel, thought must be given, about stake of neighboring communities in the zoo. If these communities do not get anything from the zoo, it becomes irrelevant for them. It becomes only a matter of attraction for them and not a matter of an organization as it is their own. Then it becomes a forced LOVE and not genuine LOVE. As a Forest Officer I knew that Forest department of Govt of West Bengal spends considerable money and effort in training the forest fringe villagers in different crafts. This is done with a view to lessen their dependence on forest and forest products, which in turn has helped us a lot in protecting our forests. This is genuine effort by the Forest department towards Joint Forest Management ancillary activities.
